Public Outreach

I believe that an integral part of being a scientist is to be able to transmit the importance of your findings to the public. This is essential in agricultural sciences as we work in close collaboration with local institutions, students and farmers who can largely benefit from the new knowledge acquired in favor of their communities.

There are two ways in which I try to contribute for moving my science from the desk to the real world.

Cocoa Pollination Workshops

I organize workshops oriented to cocoa producers on simple management practices to enhance pollination services. My focus is mainly on artificial (hand pollination) and natural pollination.

Artificial pollination
  • Basic cocoa tree biology (flower to fruit development)
  • Hand pollination tools
  • Training farmers to carry hand pollination

Natural pollination
  • Basic plant-pollinator ecological concepts
  •  Potential habitats of pollinators
  • Farm management adjustments to enhance pollinators in the farm

Workshops for students and children

It is exciting to see the engagement of the new generations on sustainability topics in regions where I do field research.

The exchange with them makes me realize that we share similar concerns, and interest in putting the hands to work to protect the environment.

I organize, with the strong support of many international volunteers, workshops and talks oriented to children and students in the areas where I carry out research.

Workshops and talks aim to use our multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary background as a path to find solutions on current social and environmental problems facing our communities.
